A Photographic Guide to the Wildlife of Sri Lanka

Published by . Filed under Featured, Natural History - India & Sri Lanka. Total of no comments in the discussion.

A Photographic Guide to the Wildlife of Sri Lanka begins with an overview of Sri Lanka’s climate and geography, its wildlife habitats, and phylogenetic groups. Key mammal watching sites are listed. The main part of the book contains concise species descriptions of 450 birds, 122 mammals, 330 butterflies and other insects, 72 reptiles and amphibians, 90 fish, 72 other invertebrates, and 42 trees and herbaceous plants; each one accompanied by a photograph.

Sri Lanka has a strong claim to be the best all-round wildlife-watching destination in the world. No other country has its winning combination of endemic biodiversity; large land mammals, such as the Asian Elephant, Leopard and Sloth Bear; marine mammals, especially the Blue Whale and Sperm Whale, and varied bird species, such as Red-faced Malkoha and Yellow-fronted Barbet. Covering these and many others, this guide is packed with 1,170 different species.

Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne is one of Sri Lanka’s most high-profile wildlife personalities. In the words of British TV Naturalist Bill Oddie, no single individual has done so much to brand a country for its wildlife. A graduate from Imperial College, London, he has been passionate about Sri Lanka’s wildlife since the age of three when he went on his first leopard safari in Yala. He has authored and photographed over 300 articles for national and international newspapers and magazines on Sri Lankan biodiversity, travel and business topics. His many books include Wild Sri Lanka and the Photographic Field Guide to the Birds of Sri Lanka also published by John Beaufoy Publishing. He branded the Elephant Gathering and introduced the concepts of Leopard Safaris and Dragonfly Safaris in Sri Lanka. He also publicised Sri Lanka as Best for Blue Whale, as the best chance for seeing a super-pod of Sperm Whales on a whale watch and publicised Kalpitiya as a third whale-watching hot spot.He has brought together a team of experts to write about the various species groups.

Travels in Egypt and Nubia

“Travels in Egypt and Nubia” is the travel journal of Giovanni Belzoni, and tells the story of three ground-breaking journeys he made between 1815 and 1819, describing magical monuments such as the temple at Abu Simbel, the pyramid at Khafre and the tomb of Seti I.

Giovanni Belzoni was one of the great 19th century explorers and adventurers. A colourful character, he performed as a circus strongman on the streets of London and claimed to have studied as an engineer. He first went to Egypt intending to sell a water wheel he had designed. While there he was employed by British Consul-General, Henry Salt, to physically remove huge Egyptian monuments for shipping to Britain. He made two more long trips up the Nile gathering artefacts. Though he had a poor reputation as a treasure-hunter and tomb plunderer, he is now rated for his careful recordings of excavations including detailed drawings and plans.

Trevor Naylor has worked in bookselling and publishing around the world for over 40 years. Much of that time has been spent in and around the Middle East and Egypt, where he has travelled extensively. He lived in Egypt for over 15 years and is the author of several books including the bestselling illustrated travelogue “Cairo Inside Out”.

The Voyage of the Beagle

“The Voyage of the Beagle” is Charles Darwin’s diary of his travels between 1831 and 1836, when he developed many of the ideas that eventually led to his theory of natural selection.

Charles Darwin joined HMS Beagle when he was just 22 at the request of Captain FitzRoy, who wanted to have a naturalist on board. The ship set sail from Plymouth Sound on 27 December 1831 and returned nearly five years later on 2 October 1836. The journey took Darwin from the Cape de Verde Islands to Mauritius, visiting locations as varied as Brazil, Tierra del Fuego, the Galapagos archipelago, South Africa, New Zealand and the Azores.

Darwin’s book is a vivid travel diary of this trip with personal anecdotes and observations on religious beliefs and racial typecasting, as well as a detailed scientific field journal covering biology, geology and anthropology. He found bones of extinct mammals, experienced volcanoes and discovered many new bird species. The book was instantly acclaimed and the insights he gained through his investigations eventually led to his theory of natural selection.

James T. Costa is executive director of Highlands Biological Station and Professor of Biology at Western Carolina University in America. A naturalist, and Darwin and Wallace scholar, his books include “The Annotated Origin, Darwin, Wallace, and the Origin of Species”, “Darwin’s Backyard: How Small Experiments Led to a Big Theory”, and “Radical by Nature: The Revolutionary Life of Alfred Russel Wallace”.
