Beginning with a definition of who the people of The Philippines are, this fully illustrated history then tracks back to describe the prehistory of the country through to 1500 AD. The next two chapters chart the colonial experiences under Spain (1500–1896), then the first republic and the subsequent defeat by the United States (1860–1910). Following this are chapters on the Japanese occupation and the third republic (1910–1972). Next comes a description of the Marcos dictatorship and its consequences (1970–1986) and the book ends with a look at the fifth republic and the future of the country. An Illustrated History of Thailand (3rd edition)

Published by . Filed under Featured, History. Total of no comments in the discussion.

An Illustrated History of Thailand is divided geographically according to the sequence of succeeding Thai kingdoms. Each section follows a historical chronology, covering accounts of major events during each reign, with an assessment of the character of individual kings and their particular achievements, together with those of other major players. This record of events is blended with descriptive passages about monuments surviving today that are relevant to and help illuminate the history. Political development is thus paralleled by Thailand’s cultural development, especially in relation to the religious and royal architecture.

Thailand’s historical progression has been complex, and although the foundations of national identity – religion and monarchy in particular – were established in the earliest days of statehood dating back to the 13th century, it is only in comparatively recent times that all elements – social, political, cultural and linguistic – have cohered into what is recognizable today as Thai and Thailand. By linking the text to existing landmarks, the history provides both an enjoyable read in its own right and a fascinating guide to the monuments and buildings that visitors can see on their travels around the country. This third edition brings the history fully up to date.

The World’s Great River Journeys

Published by . Filed under Rail and River Travel. Total of no comments in the discussion.

Journeying by river provides the perfect opportunity to discover new places or see a new side of a familiar destination. Presented here are 50 remarkable and memorable trips chosen because of the stunning scenery they pass through as well as the historic and cultural sites that can be visited from side excursions. Some cover lengthy trips such as a cruise on the Danube that passes through ten countries from its source before emptying into the Black Sea; others are shorter but have a strong, unifying theme, such as Portugal’s Douro River that was built on viticulture. In Southeast Asia, the leisurely pace of a river trip along the Yangtze, Mekong or Ayeryawaddy Rivers allows time to take in the ancient cultures and exotic landscapes.

Beautiful countryside, wine-rich valleys and dramatic gorges are the highlights of a river journey; the scenery is constant and ever changing. But as well as the natural wonders, there are also remarkable man-made engineering feats to experience as you pass through intricate lock systems or under state-of-the-art bridges.

All the important landmarks and cities, scenery and architecture are described for each journey, and each one is illustrated with a route map.
